Making A Difference: Cindy Pappas
Conservation is a core value on Block Island. Housing is also a fundamental need.
Cindy Pappas has worked tirelessly to advance both causes.
Cindy and her husband Tony moved to Block Island in 1976 when he took over the pulpit at Harbor Baptist Church. She was just out of college and began working for the town running the rec center and learning the real estate business from Dorothy Sullivan of Sullivan Real Estate. Nine years later she would take over the agency after Dorothy’s untimely death.
One would think that running a business would take nearly all of Cindy’s time — not to mention raising two children and supporting her husband’s pastorate — but Cindy became involved in her community in an extraordinary way.
A founding member of The Land Trust, Cindy worked on its behalf for more than a decade, spending nearly half the time as Chair. She also served as a director of Block Island Conservancy putting in countless hours as a volunteer. Her efforts won her a Bayberry Wreath Award in 1993 and national recognition in the form of the Chevron Conservation Award.
Cindy also recognized the need for affordable housing by becoming a charter member of the Block Island Housing Board when it was formed in 2004. Today, she is chair of the Housing Board and spends countless hours leading the organization in its important efforts. She oversaw the construction of the Jacke project on Champlin Road and is now advancing the housing construction about to begin on the Brown/Smith property off Cooneymus Road. She travels to the building site, lobbies state agencies, meets with contractors and runs an efficient meeting every month.
Cindy Pappas has made a difference on Block Island for four decades. And it certainly doesn’t appear that she is slowing down.
Thanks, Cindy.
